This year we are working on numerous projects. Two wednesdays out of the month many Interact students volunteer about three hours of their time, to tutor and play with the children at South's Latchkey. Two thursdays of the month students volunteer at Serve City. Volunteers help with stocking the pantry. There are also other service opportunities that arise from different people/organizations in the community.
Our two main projects for this year is the Basketball Benefit, and our own WorldStock. The Basketball Benefit event is a fundraiser for "Invisible" Children of Uganda. Invisible Children is a charity founded after three students filmed a documentary title "Rough Cut" about the abduction of children and their being forced to become child soldiers. The purpose of the charity is to help these war affected children by providing access to quality education, enhanced learning environments, and innovative economic opportunities for the community. The Ugandan civil war is the longest civil war in africa and has been called "the most neglected humanitarian emergency in the world today," so the work of this charity is vital the fragile and unstable peace that has been set up in Uganda. For more info check out the invisible children website. Invisible Children - Invisible Children. The Basketball Benefit gives students from the school get the chance to show their skills on the court and support a great cause. There is one sophomore team, one junior team, two senior teams, and even one teacher team. The teams go through a bracket and at the end the winning student team plays the teacher team. The Basketball event will be on January 24th at 6:30 in the Fairfield High School Arena. Admission is $5.
WorldStock: WorldStock is supposed to be a twist on Woodstock. It will be a battle of the bands. This will also be a fundraiser that will benefit another charity to be determined at a later time.
